This course introduces and develops the methods of science research through participation in three science/engineering competition events and by completion of supporting coursework. The study of forensics is popularized by many shows, such as Dexter, CSI, Forensic Files, Criminal Minds, Bones, and more. The competition has been held annually at the San Jose Convention Center, but for precautionary reasons, the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association (SCVSEFA) has decided to host. As forensic experts, students will be able to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students will also receive support to participate in our district science fair, Sciencepalooza, in order to enhance their personal science experiences. The annual Synopsys Science & Technology Championship, which features work from students in Santa Clara Valley, is going virtual due to concerns over the coronavirus. Successful completion of the course involves practicing being observant, documenting using writing skills, and applied math including trigonometry. The course also includes investigation of world events such as the 9/11 World Trade Tower attacks and the assassination of John F. Adventures in STEAM: Transitioning from a Science Fair to an Interactive STEAM Showcase. Units included in this year-long course include crime scene documentation, trace evidence, hair and fiber analysis, blood spatter calculation, firearms and bullet analysis, handwriting study, and forensic pathology. Students will apply each of the core sciences - biology, chemistry, and physics - in order to become experts in several areas of forensic study. The students qualified for Intel ISEF after receiving grand prizes at the 2018 Synopsys Science & Technology Championship in March. About 1,800 high school students from around the world showcase their research each year at the event, which is the world’s largest science fair for pre-college students, millions of whom participate in local science fairs to earn a chance to appear at Intel ISEF.This course introduces and develops the methods used by forensic scientists, and the term for application of it is often shortened to “forensics”. Also successful was junior Cameron Jones, who received a fourth place award in the physics and astronomy category for his project, titled “Automated Identification and Inference of Organic Molecular Structure and Relative Concentrations from Infrared Spectral Data.” The pair also won first place and $750 from the Air Force Research Laboratory. At this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held May 14-18 in Pittsburgh, juniors Anjay Saklecha and Krish Kapadia were grand award winners, receiving a fourth place award of $500 for their project, “UCH-L1 and s100B in Saliva as Novel Biomarkers for Severe Traumatic Brain Injury,” in the translational medical science category.
